If you are a church, you must decide if you desire IRS 501(c)3 status or not. There are those who operate totally separate of IRS involvement which at this time is totally legal. However, any donations given to the church could be challenged should the donor list it as a deductable gift on their taxes.
If you are a religious organization, you must either choose to incorporate as a for profit organization or non profit. Incorporating as nonprofit requires certain limitations to activities as prescribed by the IRS. Incorporating as profit organization will disqualify you for 501(c)3 status but give you more liberty to your activities. The down side is you are subject to taxes.
Below are links for each state from NOLO publications. Their books will literally take you through the process step by step. When the founder of FGRMC formed the organization, he used NOLO. One of the pieces of advice that Nolo gave was. The IRS inquiries through the process can become very frustrating but keep answering the questions and pressing forward to your non profit status.
